The Teaching Fellow program at the University of Waterloo was established in 2012 in response to recommendations by a task force examining innovative teaching practices on campus. Each faculty has a Senior Teaching Fellow whose purpose is to provide leadership in teaching within their faculty and to work closely with the academic support services such as the Centre for Teaching Excellence, the Centre for Extended Learning and the Student Success Office to enhance teaching and learning. The Centre for Teaching Excellence has a Liaison within each faculty who works closely with the Fellows. Each department within the Faculty of Science also has a Teaching Fellow, who together with the Senior Fellow foster the teaching culture within their department. We will discuss the Teaching Fellow program and some of the teaching initiatives that have come about as a result of this program in our departments, within Science and across the university.

Carey Bissonnette is Lecturer and Chemistry Teaching Fellow at the University of Waterloo. His interest is in chemical education and the identification of threshold concepts. He was a recipient of Waterloo’s Distinguished Teaching Award in 2005.
Joe Sanderson is Associate Professor and Physics Teaching Fellow at the University of Waterloo. His scientific research is in the area of the interaction of matter with femtosecond laser pulses. He is also interested in physics education research.
Mary Power is Faculty of Science Liaison with the Centre for Teaching Excellence at the University of Waterloo. She works with instructors in the Faculty of Science on teaching initiatives with a particular focus on blended learning.
